How can one “claim space”?

Spatial studies in a nutshell, from my understanding, with a little help from Henri Lefebvre:

Spatial studies draws upon a multi-disciplinary understanding of the various interlocutors, both physically and symbolically, that live, interact, and ascribe meaning onto a particular space. By understanding “(social) space as a (social) product,” Henri Lefebvre alludes to the way in which spaces become inhabited with both historical memory and continued interpreted reality through their social use.  A relationship is cultivated between the overhead aesthetic landscape, intersecting daily realities of pedestrians, and complex symbolisms of how the space is continuously lived and experienced.
